For one thing I was in a bit of a rush, as I was trying to get round as many churches as I could while they were (notionally) open, it being Ride+Stride day. (This is the 2nd Saturday in September each year when people are encouraged to walk or cycle to as many churches as they can and be sponsored for doing so. Many churches that are normally locked, eg Willian, open their doors for the day. However, several that were on the list of open churches proved not to be so, eg Hunsdon and Watton-at-Stone, which I've not been in for decades and are usually impregnably locked.)

My guess is that the object in the right foreground is a piece of broken cross from the churchyard, and your draught-excluder is something like a piece of plaster scenery from a Calvary scene or similar.

Incidentally, I've recently often seen peregrines roosting on the tower of the old University Press building here in Cambridge, but frustratingly not when I have a camera with me. A while ago I caught sight of one thrillingly zooming around the tower of the Uni Library, where they also nest.David Gouldstonehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01446150522362785974noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-125790120445768629.post-83982788433249690492021-10-30T09:50:47.930+01:002021-10-30T09:50:47.930+01:00Clearly not mediaeval, but did you investigate tha...Clearly not mediaeval, but did you investigate that heap of stone?/fabric? on iner doorstep of the Norman door into the chancel? Perhaps it's just an elaborate draught-excluder.CGhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06042550309690689027noreply@blogger.com
